Prolotherapy Calgary uses the injection based healing technique known as prolotherapy to heal, relieve, and in many cases permanently fix patients ongoing pain issues, structural damages, and symptomotology that typical mainstream medicine has failed to do.
What is Prolotherapy?
Prolotherapy, also referred to as Regenerative Injection Therapy (RIT), ligament reconstructive therapy or sclerotherapy, is an orthopedic procedure that uses the bodies own healing mechanisms to strengthen and repair stretched, laxc or damaged ligaments, tendons or cartilidge.
When a ligament becomes stretched or torn it cannot fulfill its intended job; which is typically to stabilize the joint for optimal fluidity and function. When this occurs great amounts of pain, instability, cracking, popping, and reduced quality of life will occur.
Now due to the fact that ligaments and tendons receive much less blood supply than muscle tissue or other areas of the body; coupled by the additional wears, tears, and stressors of everyday lifeĀ — sometimes natural healing never occurs.
At this point a patient seeks out a solution to his problems from mainstream medicine and is often times presented with little more help or solution than a thirty day supply of pain killers, a recommendation to rest the afflicted area, and a diagnosis not much more comprehensive than “back/hip/knee/joint pain”.
Depending on the severity of the issue at hand sometimes simply resting for a few weeks is enough for the injury to heal. However, frequently it is not, and the patient is left to simply endure the pain day in and day out for possibly a lifetime if no further treatment is given.
On the other hand sometimes a patient is warranted to undergo a surgical procedure. Which arguably may or may not put the patient in a better place than he was prior to undergoing it. And in our opinon something we feel should be put off only unless absolutely necessary.
We believe in healing the non-invasive natural way by using the bodies own healing mechanisms to fix itself. And we do this through the use of the injectable healing modality known as Prolotherapy.
Prolotherapy works by injecting a combination of solutions (typically hypertonic dextrose, vitamins, and a numbing agent) directly into the ligament or area of injury. At this point a localized inflammation occurs and the body believes that a real injury has occured. It then begins to send out healing signals where red and white blood cells, along with other healing agents are sent to the area to strengthen, repair, and heal the damaged tendon or ligament. The structure is now stabilized and the instability and pain are relieved.
What Can Prolotherapy Help to Heal?
Prolotherapy can help to alleviate and cure a range of symptoms, injuries, and conditions such as:
- A wide variety of “chronic pains and aches” in the body
- Back pain and aches
- Herniated discs
- TMJ
- Tennis elbow
- Sports injuries
- Chronic headaches
- Shoulder tears, strains, and issues
- Lower back pain
- Slipping rib syndrome
- Arthritis
- Knee injuries
- And much more!
Effectiveness and Success Rate
Prolotherapy, like any healing modality, has a success rate that is heavily weighed in on a number of variables. Such as an individual’s genetics, injury type, severity, natural healing capabilities, stress and lifestyle would all be factors. However, overall about 80-85% of patients see positive results and reduction in pain from treatments.
